As educational leaders we understand the importance of research informing our practice.
Being able to clearly share the ‘why’, beliefs and research behind decisions is an integral part of effective change leadership.
Let’s raise the question, how researched are you?
Let’s ponder how much of your reading is linked to research. We know that in any week you will do a lot of reading; emails, minutes, reports, and documents from our external partners. How much of this stays with you? How much do you work with others on? How much do you forget?
Professional reading can make more of an impact if we do something with it.
Professional reading isn’t just professional. It’s also a wellbeing tool. Taking time with a book, whether it’s a leadership classic, a thought-provoking article, or a great podcast, offers you the chance to slow down, recharge, and think beyond the urgent “now.” In a role where decision-making is relentless, professional reading creates breathing space to get off the dance floor and onto the balcony, as well as fresh inspiration.
In relation to doing something with reading, here are five simple reflection strategies you can try yourself or use with your team:
3–2–1 Reflection
After finishing a chapter or article:
● 3 ideas or insights that resonated
● 2 questions it raised for you
● 1 action you’ll take or explore further
Insights and Actions
Divide your page into 2 columns.
Record your Insights on one side and on the other side, Actions you might take as a result of the reading.
When we have clarity in our beliefs and values it gives us confidence and supports our decision making. This is particularly important while we sit in spaces of uncertainty.
“Don’t just know the research. Use the research”
All the best for the end of term 3 and a restful break.
