The year is underway; you’ve established routines, invested in relationship building and set expectations, so now what is the role you will play? Are you going to be proactive or an ostrich? How do we know how people are feeling and progressing with change 5-6 weeks into the new school year? Our provocation is- how can you apply the concept of intervening early at the lowest level across your leadership?

Conversations

“Teams can only improve what they talk about”

●      Have bite-sized check-ins, gauging how people are feeling during change, rather than waiting until there’s an issue.

●      Self-reflection: Ask yourself, if I had this conversation and managed it well, what difference would that make? What would be the benefit(s) of that? What would be the cost of not having it?

●      Celebrate and course correct: As you prepare for monitoring how are you going to celebrate the meaningful impact you and your teams have made for learners? And how will you course correct to set yourselves up for success in term 2?

The Ripple Effect

How deeply have you considered the ripple effect of the demands that new learning, implementation and school events place on the staff?

Consider reviewing your calendar. Look at the remaining weeks of the term and identify the ripple effect of events and hui. For example: A PLD facilitator is modelling writing in classrooms. What is the expectation from the modelling sessions? Are teachers clear on what they are expected to do as a result of this? When will they have time and support to do it? Who is responsible for providing the support and accountability? Who will follow-up and how will you know the impact?

Consider what else is on the calendar in close proximity to the above…….. apply the ripple effect to that.

Leadership Resilience

You get better at doing hard things by doing hard things.

Use the Zone In tool below to reflect on where you’ve been spending your time. What does it tell you? What can you start | stop | continue doing? If the majority of your time is in the stretch or panic zones, what can you dump, delegate, do, or delay in order to reset yourself?

If you were going to intervene at the lowest level this term where would you start?
